Aakash Chopra says it is tough to choose between Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer at no.4 for the T20 World Cup

Aakash Chopra has said that it would be difficult for the selectors let alone himself to pick 1 between Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav in the middle-order for the T20 World Cup that will take place later this year in the UAE.

No.4 spot tough to decide even for selectors – Aakash Chopra

The Indian team for the World Cup looks to be sorted with many of the players pick themselves in the line-up, there could be a place or two up for the grabs. One such place that is vacant is the no.4 slot which is primarily filled by Shreyas Iyer. But in recent times, Surya Yadav has emerged as a contender owing to his stunning debut in the England T20I series.

Aakash Chopra talking on his Youtube channel answered a fan question who asked, which of the 2 players he will pick at no.4, Suryakumar Yadav or Shreyas Iyer. To which the former Indian opener replied that he was not in a position to answer.

He called it a selection headache for even the selectors but felt that it could be tilted to Iyer’s favor because of his experience at this level and also is the captain of his IPL team.

This is a very very tough question whom you will like to pick. I am not in a position at the moment and I don’t think even the selectors are in a position to take that call,” Aakash said.

If Rahul and Rohit open and Kohli plays at No.3, you play Hardik and Rishabh Pant at No.5 or No.6 or the other way around, then you have got Ravindra Jadeja followed by Washington Sundar. So, only one slot is left and that is No.4. So Shreyas or Suryakumar at No.4, it is a tough call,” he added.

“You will tilt towards Shreyas Iyer only because he has the greater experience, he has already performed well in the ODI team and is also the captain of his team. If he does well in the IPL, you might just go with him, to begin with,” Aakash opined.

Aakash further highlighted the fact that SKY has 6 games potentially left to book his ticket to the World Cup squad. Yadav is likely to play at no.3 in the upcoming Sri Lanka series and will want to make the best use of it.
Surya made a stunning start to his T20I career earlier this year, scoring a half-century on debut against England.
Chopra concluded by saying that selection of either Yadav or Iyer in the XI will most likely be based on the current form. As he felt, both these players have the requisite ability in the T20 format.
“But if Suryakumar Yadav does very well in the six matches now and the IPL also complements that, then you will have to go with Suryakumar Yadav. It’s a lovely dilemma. I can’t pick a player at this point in time because both are good and have the ability to play at better than run-a-ball and have the requisite experience of T20 cricket. So maybe just go by current form,” he concluded.
Shreyas Iyer is still recovering from the shoulder injury that he sustained in the 1st ODI against England earlier this year and had to be operated on. He eventually missed the IPL and is not part of the Sri Lanka tour. But the good news is that Iyer will make his return in the remainder of IPL that will restart in September.
He will look to cash in on the tournament to make it to the starting XI of the World Cup for India.
