ACB appoints Rashid Khan as the new T20I skipper of the Afghanistan team

Afghanistan Cricket Board(ACB) has named Rashid Khan as the new captain of the T20I team going into the T20 World Cup 2021. He will replace Asghar Afghan who was sacked as the skipper earlier in May. Najibullah Zadran, the middle-order batsman was named as his deputy in this format.

Rashid Khan to be T20I skipper of Afghanistan once again

ACB in a release in May said, Afghan is removed from his duties as captain owing to his questionable captaincy in their 1st Test loss to Zimbabwe. While they named Hashmatullah Shahidi as the new ODI and Test skipper, the board said the decision to appoint the new T20I captain “will be taken soon”.

The decision to remove Asghar Afghan from captaincy was taken based on an investigation conducted by ACB’s Investigative committee which concluded that some of Afghan’s decisions as the captain of the team resulted in Afghanistan’s loss to Zimbabwe in the first Test of the series between both sides in Abu Dhabi in March,” ACB said in a release.

This is the 2nd time in his career, the leg-spinner is assuming captaincy. The first one was after Afghan was removed as skipper just before ICC World Cup 2019 and the duo of Gulbadin Naib & Rashid Khan named as the captain of ODI, Test & T20I teams respectively. After a poor show by the team in World Cup, Rashid was named the captain in all formats. But in a turn of events, Asghar Afghan was once again back at the helm in 2020.

Rashid was selected by senior ACB leadership led by ACB Chairman Farhan Yousefzai, for the role considering his experience, brilliant performance as well as leadership skills with the National team over the years,” ACB said on the decision to make Rashid Khan T20I captain.

Rashid Khan had led the T20I team in 7 matches in 2019 winning 4 of those. He has also captained the Afghanistan side in 7 ODIs and 2 Test matches winning 1 each respectively.

The wily leg-spinner, Rashid is one of the best of the best bowlers in this format. He has featured in 51 T20Is for his national team, claiming 95 wickets at a stunning average of just under 22. He has also taken 2 5-wicket hauls in this format.

Overall, the 22-year-old has played in 295 T20s across the globe in all many leagues. Rashid has scalped a whopping 370 wickets and is the 6th highest wicket-taker.
