A great finishing touch from Daryl Mitchell’s bat and a disciplined display from the bowling unit helped the Kiwis register their first win on their ongoing Indian tour, as they defeated the hosts by 21 runs in the first T20I on Friday, January 27.
Asked to bat first by the Indian skipper Hardik Pandya, New Zealand posted a total of 176 runs for the loss of six wickets. The Black Caps got a quickfire start from their openers Finn Allen and Devon Conway before Washington Sundar struck twice in the fifth over and dismissed both Allen and Mark Chapman.
In what was a nail-biting encounter, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya held their nerve as India edged past New Zealand to secure a 6-wicket victory. With this Team India level up the three-match series in Lucknow. Interestingly enough, despite a low scoring affair, the Kiwis made a match out of it by testing the mettle of the Indian batting line up. Moreover, the game went to the wire whereby, with India needing four runs off just 3 balls. Albeit, Sky kept his cool and lofted Tickner over the mid-off to take his team home.
The Kiwis clearly had their task cut off and took note of how the hosts bowled to them during their innings. Henceforth, New Zealand employed different spinners throughout the match and exploited the turn and bounce off the pitch. Meanwhile, the Indian skipper, Hardik Pandya, played a sensible knock (15 runs off 20 balls) to hold the fort for India at end, while Suryakumar Yadav (26 runs off 31 balls) kept the scoreboard ticking to take the match deeper.
At one stage, the hosts suffered consecutive run outs, which derailed their easy looking run chase of 100 runs for a while. The Kiwi bowlers kept bowling in good areas and had reduced the hosts to 70/4. Despite that Yadav remained the anchor-in-chief for his team. Both the batters stitched a crucial partnership of 31 runs for the fifth wicket.
