Deep Dasgupta sees India playing Rahul Chahar ahead of Yuzuvendra Chahal in the T20 World Cup

Deep Dasgupta has said that he sees the young leg-spinner Rahul Chahar playing ahead of the more experienced Yuzuvendra Chahal in the T20 World Cup. The former wicket-keeper batsman felt that it is unlikely to see Kuldeep Yadav playing in the mega tournament.

The once potent combo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzuvendra Chahal have struggled in recent times in white-ball cricket. While Kuldeep hasn’t featured a lot for India or in IPL for KKR in the last 2 years, Chahal has been far from his best. In India’s last home T20I series, youngster Rahul Chahar replaced senior statesmen Chahal for a couple of games and did decently well.

The former Indian cricketer in an interaction on Youtube said that India will likely go with the Mumbai Indians spinner Rahul Chahar ahead of Chahal. This he feels will hold good unless the latter has a brilliant Sri Lanka series and IPL that follows. He also added that the chances of Kuldeep playing are rather bleak at the moment.

Though Chahar has played only 3 T20Is, picking as many wickets, he has considerable experience in the IPL. He has played in 38 IPL matches, taking 41 wickets at an average of 24.41.

At the moment, it looks unlikely. To be very honest, I see Rahul Chahar ahead of Yuzi (Yuzvendra Chahal). A lot will depend on the Sri Lanka series and obviously on the IPL as well. As for Kuldeep, he has not been the preferred bowler for more than a year and a half. So, it looks unlikely to me as of now. I don’t know what will happen in six months,” said Deep Dasgupta.

He also felt that the wicket-keeper batsmen Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan has an equal chance to feature in the World Cup squad. Deep Dasgupta added that both should get matches in this upcoming Sri Lanka series to prove their worth.

I think both of them have earned their stripes, they should share the games in the series. Both of them have an opportunity for the World Cup, so yeah, if they are six matches, both should play [some of them] as wicketkeeper-batsmen,” he concluded.

India’s tour of Sri Lanka will begin on the 18th of July in Colombo and the teams will play 3 ODIs & as many T20Is. This will provide a great opportunity for the aforementioned players to stake a claim in the World Cup squad.
