India and Chennai Super Kings bowler Deepak Chahar credited his CSK skipper MS Dhoni for his match winning effort with the bat in the 2nd ODI against Sri Lanka.
In a video posted by The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the 28-year-old revealed how the experience of playing alongside Dhoni and watching him during his initial days helped him in taking the game to the last over and finishing it off in the one dayer at Colombo.
Chahar applied Dhoni’s theory of finishing games in the second ODI
“Watching MS Dhoni close out matches has been a big factor. I have watched him for a long period and I have always seen him finishing matches. When you talk to him, he always tells you to take the game deep. Everyone wants us to win, but when the match goes deep, it is thrilling for everyone involved,” said Deepak Chahar in the virtual press conference.
Chahar also talked about his batting and said for years he’s been working on that skills with his father and it doesn’t bother him if people look at him as a potential all-rounder or not.
“I have always worked on my batting and my father has been my coach. When I talk to him, we always talk about my batting. It doesn’t matter if people see me as all-rounder or not. The batsman who is playing alongside me will get confidence that I can hang around and will not give my wicket away. It is very important for a batsman to know that his partner will support him,” he added.
When the team was reeling at 119/5 Deepak Chahar played a scintillating knock of 69* while batting at number 8 and took his team home in a fitting way in the 2nd ODI.
