Mumbai Indians are back to their original best in IPL 2022 after facing 8 consecutive defeats. In a thrilling contest MI beat table toppers Gujarat Titans by 5 runs to register their second victory of the season.
The match came down to a thrilling contest in the final over with GT requiring only 9 runs with Tewatia & Miller on strike. The finishing stars of last few matches for GT failed in front of Daniel Sams who gave away only 3 runs in final over.
Earlier, chasing a target of 178 runs, Gujarat Titans have got a perfect start with both openers scoring half-centuries. Shubman Gill scored 52 runs off 36 balls while Wriddhiman Saha scored 55 off 40 as they added 106 runs in 12 overs.
M Ashwin dismissed both Shubman & Saha in 13th over of the innings to bring MI back in the game. Sai Sudarshan was hit wicket off Kieron Pollard’s bowling in 16th over. Skipper Hardik Pandya was also found short of the crease by a proactive Ishan Kishan while stealing a run.
In the 19th over, Iceman – Tewatia & David Miller took 11 runs off Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling to reduce the equation to just 9 runs in final over. Daniel Sams bowled cleverly to deny any big hits to Miller, Tewatia & Rashid Khan.
Earlier, after winning the toss Gujarat Titans skipper Hardik Pandya opted to field first. MI got a good start with Rohit Sharma & Ishan Kishan both showing the glimpses of their destructive form. The opening pair added 74 runs in 7.3 overs as Rohit scored 43 off 28 while Ishan scored 45 off 29.
Tim David provided the death over killing as he scored 44 runs off 21 balls with 4 sixes and 2 boundaries. He was declared as Player of the Match for lifting MI to 177/6 in 20 overs.
With the loss Gujarat Titans are still at top place and despite the victory Mumbai Indians are at bottom place in IPL Points table.
