“I personally feel the timing could have been better”- Aakash Chopra on Virat Kohli relinquishing his T20I captaincy

Aakash Chopra has said that Virat Kohli’s announcement on Thursday that he is resigning from his T20I captaincy has come at a really wrong time. The Indian skipper will step down as the skipper of the shortest format after the T20I World Cup 2021.

There were a lot of speculations in the media days before his announcement that BCCI is looking beyond as the skipper in white-ball cricket and he himself wants quit captaincy to manage workload.

Aakash Chopra talking on his youtube channel questioned the timing of Virat’s decision. He added that the 32-year-old could have announced it after the World Cup.

I personally feel the timing could have been better. The rumor market is hot and would have gone cold after a few days and you could have captained in the World Cup at ease. If you had won the trophy, you could have bid goodbye after that and everyone would have clapped,” he reasoned.

If you had not won, then no problem. Of course, things can go this way or that way and then you could have said that it is enough, it did not happen and you want to step aside,

Chopra felt his decision to call it quits even before the IPL was slightly odd and concerning. he believed that it will be strange to see split captaincy if both players play all 3 formats, given Rohit Sharma is the front-runner to be the new T20I skipper.

The IPL has not even started and before that, you have decided that you will leave the captaincy after captaining in the World Cup, I find it slightly off. It is his decision, when he wants to leave captaincy is completely in his hands. But personally, I am slightly concerned about the timing,” Aakash added.
When the same two players play all the three formats, and one is the captain in one format and the other in the other two, it’s a strange equation. It is slightly difficult to balance that,” he concluded.
