India’s world cup winning captain MS Dhoni turns 40, wishes pour in from many corners of cricketing fraternity

MS Dhoni, the former Indian captain is celebrating his birthday today and has turned 40. Coming from a humble background, Dhoni rose the ranks quickly and has etched his name in the annals of cricket with his achievement. Captain cool as he is called, also has put his home city of Ranchi on the cricketing map.

He may have started his international career with a first-ball duck in ODIs against Bangladesh in 2004, but from then on Dhoni never looked back. He attained the world no.1 ranking in ODIs after just his 38th innings, the quickest to do so.

In 2007, he took over the reigns as the captain of the T20 side and led them to an epic win in the inaugural T20 World Cup. Dhoni won the CB series in 2008 and became the skipper in all the 3 formats. Under him, India won Test series in New Zealand in 2009, drew 1-1 in South Africa and were crowned the no.1 team in world in 2011.

In the same year, India won the ICC World Cup 2011 at home, after a gap of 28 long years. 2 years, later he led an young Indian team to a Champions trophy win in England. Overall he has led India in a record 332 games(60 Tests, 200 ODIs and 72 T20Is), winning 179 of those.

From the inception of IPL in 2008, MS Dhoni remained the captain of the franchise till date. He has led them to 3 IPL titles(2010, 2011, and 2018) and also to 2 Champions league titles. He was given the nickname “Thala” by the CSK fans.

On the occasions of his birthday, wishes are pouring in from all corners. From apex cricket boards like ICC, BCCI to present and former cricketers who have known Dhoni well over the years have wished him in their Twitter handle.

Former teammates Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, Suresh Raina, Ishant Sharma,Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman, Mohammad Kaif, Dinesh Karthik, Mohmmad Shami, Hardik Pandya, R Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane are among those who wished Dhoni. CSK franchise uploaded a video collage of his teammates wishing Dhoni on their official twitter page.

Apart from his captaincy, Dhoni was a prolific batsman and one of the safest keepers in the world. Depsite not being technically sound batsman and a keeper, he had a method of his own.

In 350 ODIs, MSD has scored 10773 runs at an average of 50.53 with 10 centuries and 73 fifties. He is one of the 2 players along with Virat Kohli to average over 50 after scoring more than 10,000 runs. He has also affected 444 dismissals(321 catches and 123 stumpings).

Dhoni has the 3rd most runs as a keeper in Test cricket scoring 4876 runs in 90 games at an average of over 38. He has 256 catches and 38 stumpings in the longest format of the game. Likewise in T20I cricket, he has featured in 98 games for India scoring 1617 runs with a strike rate of 126.

Across the format, MS Dhoni has scored 17266 runs which is the 2nd most as a wicket-keeper batsman in cricket at an average of 44.96 with 16 centuries in 538 games. Only Kumar Sangakkara is ahead of in this regard.
