India’s youngest test wicketkeeper – Parthiv Patel bids adieu to all forms of Cricket

Published on

Indian Wicket-keeper batsman Parthiv Patel announced his retirement from all forms of cricket with immediate effect. The left-hander informed about his retirement by taking Twitter as a medium.

Parthiv Patel was just 17 years 152 days old when he made his international debut for India in Tests against England at Trent bridge in 2002. His debut match ended in a draw, Parthiv scored a duck in the first innings and 19* runs in the second innings.

Since his early days in international cricket, Parthiv was seen as a one-star wicket-keeper batsman to watch out for. But the emergence of recruits like MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik cost him his place in the side. Especially, MS Dhoni was light years ahead of him and other keepers.

“On this day, as I pause and reflect to assess how for I have come, the biggest wish I have is for my father to have been standing beside me, at the closure of my journey as a cricket player, as he has thru most of my life and career. Today, I announce my retirement from all forms of cricket, and as I bring down the curtains on thin 18-year-old cricketing journey. I feel heavier with gratitude toward many,” Parthiv said in his retirement statement on Twitter.

The BCCI showed a generous amount of confidence and faith in a 17-year-old boy to play for India. I have enormous gratitude towards them for being a guiding force and hand holding me, in the formative years of my young career. I’m thankful to all the captains I have played under. I’m especially indebted to Dada, my first captain who showed immense faith in me. I Feel privileged to have been in the company of and learnt from some stellar team mates a lot of whom I can call friends today in the same breath I must admit players on the opposing team have been as inspiring and thought me well.”

Parthiv made 66 appearances, scoring 1706 runs for India. His journey was a topsy-turvy ride. Patel started with a couple of bad series, which made the selectors go with a long-haired destructive wicket-keeper.

The last time he played an ODI for the country was way back in 2012. However, he kept knocking on the door of selection by performing outstandingly well for his Ranji team. He played his last international game at Johannesburg in 2018 against South Africa which also was Jasprit Bumrah’s debut test.

“I am full of gratitude to the Gujarat Cricket Association, my home, for solidly rallying around me throughout my journey, and the leadership role conferred upon me couldn’t have been more joyous and fulfilling than our team winning all formats of the game,”  Parthiv Patel said in retirement post.

Opposite to his international career, he was a domestic giant. He played 204 T20 games, scoring over 4000 runs. While in List-A he played 193 matches, scored 5172 runs at 29.7. He played 194 first-class games in which he had scored 11,240 runs with 27 hundred at an average of about 43. He scored 143 runs in the fourth innings to guide Gujarat to their maiden Ranji title in 2016-17.
