IPL 2022 Auction: 3 teams that might target Ishan Kishan

Given the number of genuine match-winners they had in their squad, Mumbai Indians had the most to lose heading into the IPL Player Auctions. They have retained their core in the form of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Kieron Pollard, and Jasprit Bumrah. But, they have had to let go of a number of talents they’ve groomed over the years like Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Rahul Chahar among others.

Ishan Kishan is one of the rising talents of the game who’s impressed all with his aggressive strokeplay. He’s amassed a total of 1452 runs across six seasons of the Indian Premier League. Over the years, he’s also improved as a wicket-keeper making him a valuable commodity to have in a T20 team. So, which of the IPL franchises might target him in the Auctions?

MS Dhoni to groom Ishan Kishan to be his successor?

1) Chennai Super Kings

MS Dhoni has donned the wicketkeeper gloves for the Chennai Super Kings in every season they’ve appeared in the Indian Premier League. While there’s no denying that Dhoni is one of the best wicketkeepers in the business, his days as a batsman who could tear up even the most fearsome of bowling attacks are far behind him.

So, CSK will be on the lookout for an aggressive wicketkeeper-batsman that might function as a long-term option for them. Ishan Kishan could prove to be the answer to their prayers. They could use him either as an opening batsman to give CSK the prolific starts they are in need of or as a floater who could slot in anywhere in the batting order. Moreover, he could evolve into a powerful finisher under the tutelage of the MSD who’s done that multiple times for the Men in Yellow.

2) Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad having let go of their foreign batsmen, namely David Warner and Johnny Bairstow have two glaring issues to deal with. One of them is that they need to find an aggressive opening batsman who can make the best out of the field restrictions and complement Kane Williamson’s role in the team as a sheet anchor. The other problem they’ll need to address is that of the absence of a talented wicketkeeper.

With the signing of Ishan Kishan in the Player Auctions, Sunrisers Hyderabad would have effectively solved both of those problems. He was one of the contenders for the Orange Cap in IPL 2020, scoring a mammoth 516 runs while averaging a mind-boggling 57.33. So, it seems likely that he might be a part of the Orange Army in the upcoming edition of the IPL.

3) Punjab Kings

Yet another IPL franchise that is on the lookout for a quality wicketkeeper-batsman is the Punjab Kings. This search began after the news broke out that their trusted captain and leading scorer, KL Rahul will be leaving the side. Rahul amassed a total of 626 runs in the last edition at a stunning strike rate of 138.80.

While it may be hard for the Punjab Kings team management to find a like-for-like replacement for KL Rahul, they do have some options. One of them could be Ishan Kishan who played a similar role in his former team, Mumbai Indians. Ishan lends both variety, thanks to him being a left-handed batsman and flexibility, thanks to his ability to bat at any slot.

So, those were the 3 IPL franchises that are most likely to be bidding for Ishan Kishan in the IPL Auctions. But, it’s pertinent to note that wicket-keepers are always in demand in a cricketing league. So, he’s sure to be on the radars of all the 8 franchises. But, like always it’s the two new franchises, namely Team Ahmedabad and Team Lucknow that will get to pick first. This step is being enforced in an attempt to even the playing field.
