Chennai Super Kings hold the distinction of being one of the most consistent teams in the Indian Premier League. This has largely been possible due to a balanced squad where every player knows what their role is. But, with the Mega Auctions coming up, there might be some major reshuffling of players. This puts CSK at the risk of losing talents like Deepak Chahar, Sam Curran, and Shardul Thakur.
Shardul Thakur over the years has proven his mettle with both bat and ball. He’s one of the most consistent players of the celebrated franchise. Thakur is currently also one of the most sought-after all-rounders in the league. So, it should as come as no surprise if his inclusion causes quite the frenzy in the upcoming Player Auctions. In this article, we take a look at three such IPL franchises that might target him.
KKR look to bolster their fast-bowling contingent
1) Kolkata Knight Riders
With the Pat Cummins gamble not quite working out for Kolkata Knight Riders, young pacers like Prasidh Krishna and Shivam Mavi had to shoulder most of the responsibility as far as bowling was concerned. As a result, these lots had to end up bowling the hard overs. While they were relatively good on the field, their inexperience showed. So, this time around, KKR will look to invest in an experienced fast-bowler.
One of the bowlers that fit into this criteria is Shardul Thakur. He was a genuine wicket-taking option for the CSK camp and Kolkata will look to exploit the same. His inclusion into the team also means that there’s less pressure on Andre Russell to complete his quota of four full overs.
2) Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals will look for a repeat of their strong showing in the next edition of the Indian Premier League. While DC has retained a quality overseas bowler in the form of Anrich Nortje, they will need an Indian pacer to join hands with him.
Shardul Thakur might very well be that bowler. He had a peach of a season in 2021 wherein he managed to secure a total of 21 wickets. The economy rate might not be ideal, but he more than makes up for it with this ability to create wicket-taking opportunities. Moreover, with Thakur and Axar, Delhi Capitals have two strong all-rounders, lending their squad much-needed balance and depth.
Homecoming on the cards for Shardul Thakur?
3) Chennai Super Kings
Given his success with the franchise, it’s a complete no-brainer that Chennai Super Kings will be interested in re-signing Shardul Thakur. Affectionately known as Lord Thakur by the fans of the game, he has a total of 67 wickets to his name. A large percentage of them came from when he donned the yellow jersey.
Thakur’s familiarity with the team setup should put CSK immediately ahead if they are successful in securing the services. The coaching staff can use this time gained in training him under match-like conditions which would otherwise have been spent on acclimatizing the player to the conditions that they’re mostly like to be in. But, with no RTMs available currently, it might prove to be a difficult task to buy him back in the upcoming Player Auctions.
So, that was a list of the three franchises that are most likely to bid for Shardul Thakur in the IPL Player Auctions. But, since all-rounders are always a valuable asset in a T20 team, other teams like Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings might also be interested in signing him. However, they will first need to contend with the two new franchises who get first picks.
