In IPL 2021, Delhi Capitals narrowly missed out on a finals spot. They will be keen to make amends this year and clinch the trophy. They chose to put their faith in Prithvi Shaw, Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, and Anrich Nortje, retaining them ahead of the Player Auctions. While these are solid picks, they’ve also had to let go of quality talent like Ravichandran Ashwin. This does mean that the door’s wide open for other IPL teams to swoop him up. So, what are some of the franchises that should target Ashwin?
Homecoming on the cards for Ashwin?
1) Chennai Super Kings
Ravichandran Ashwin began his IPL career with the Chennai Super Kings way back in 2009. Since then, he’s grown in stature and skill to become one of the most experienced campaigners of the tournament. While Ashwin’s played for multiple franchises, his best performances have come when he’s donned the yellow jersey. The stats narrate the same story. The off-spinner has managed to pick up 90 wickets while’s playing for CSK, as opposed to the 25 and 10 wickets he’s bagged while in Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals.
MS Dhoni likes to pack his side with spinners and go into a match with lots of bowling options. So, the Chennai Super Kings team management should end up targeting Ashwin. He could bowl in tandem with Ravindra Jadeja and choke the opposition as they have historically.
2) Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians are the most successful franchise in the history of the Indian Premier League, and for good reason. They have built a seemingly invincible squad over the years, but their one chink in the armor has been a quality spinner. Rahul Chahar was a decent option, but he’s far from being a world-class spinner like Rashid Khan or Ravichandran Ashwin. Chahar’s only managed to pick up 13 wickets in the previous edition of the IPL at a modest economy of 7.39.
So, Mumbai Indians should look to target Ashwin in the IPL Player Auctions. More than his expertise with the ball, Ashwin brings with him tons of experience. Rohit Sharma has proven himself to be an astute reader of the game and more than able captain which will only get amplified in the presence of Ashwin.
Will IPL 2022 be any different for SRH?
3) Sunrisers Hyderabad
Sunrisers Hyderabad will like to put their poor season behind them and will look forward to going back to their golden years in the Indian Premier League. They only won a total of 3 matches out of the 14 they played last year. Looking to turn a new leaf, SRH has retained their skipper Kane Williamson, all-rounder Abdul Samad and newbie pacer Umran Malik. They surprisingly let go of their talisman Rashid Khan ahead of the IPL Player Auctions. There is a possibility that the spinning sensation might not be happy with his contract.
Either way, Sunrisers Hyderabad will be eager to find a replacement for Rashid Khan. While Ravichandran Ashwin may not be a like-for-like replacement, he does have a total of 145 IPL wickets to his name at an impressive economy of 6.91. His experience and his ability to read the game will come in handy in the SRH camp that holds thinking cricketers in high regard.
So, those were the 3 IPL franchises that should bid for Ravichandran Ashwin in the upcoming IPL Player Auctions. But, given his impressive track record in the tournament, other teams will also like to have a spinner like him within their ranks. Some of them include the Royal Challengers Bangalore who let go of Chahal and Punjab Kings who are still reeling back from the sudden departure of their leader and highest-scoring batsman, KL Rahul.
