Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans won their first match in the IPL 2022 by beating Lucknow Super Giants in a close contest. Rahul Tewatia & Mohammed Shami shines for the Titans with their special performances to take them over the victory line.
With 68 runs required from last 5 overs and LSG best bowlers – Avesh Khan & Dushmantha Chameera left with 2 overs each, GT were in trouble. However, LSG skipper KL Rahul went to Deepak Hooda’s part time off spin in 16th over which was brutally handled by Rahul Tewatia & David Miller. 16th over brought 22 runs with 2 sixes and 2 boundaries each.
Next over was handed to Ravi Bishnoi, who had troubled Tewatia earlier in previous IPL’s. However, Rahul Tewatia was better prepared for Bishnoi’s wrongun’s this time. He dispatched the spinner for a six off first ball with a audacious reverse sweep. He struck 2 more boundaries in the over to take 17 runs and bring down the equation to 29 from 18.
Avesh Khan dismissed Miller in next over but that was too late for LSG as GT sniffed the victory. Tewatia and Manohar took them over the victory line in final over with 2 balls to spare.
Earlier, Mohammed Shami bowled a magnificent fast bowling spell with 3 wickets in powerplay. He dismissed KL Rahul for a first ball duck and then dismissed Quinton de Kock & Manish Pandey to rattle LSG team.
Deepak Hooda & Ayush Badoni along with Krunal Pandya’s late hits took LSG to a competitive total of 158/6 in 20 overs. Shami was declared as Player of the match for his opening spell.
