The five-time IPL winning captain is inarguably the first player that will be on Mumbai’s retention list for the 2022 season. Not only has Rohit Sharma contributed with the bat for Mumbai, but has carried them to being the most successful franchise in the history of the IPL. Since 2011, Rohit has been an integral part of the Mumbai set-up. Ever since Rohit took over as captain, Mumbai’s fortunes have changed drastically, with them going on to win the cash-rich league for a record five times. He has amassed 5611 runs in the IPL. Mumbai failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2021. Nonetheless, there is no doubt that Rohit will return to lead the side next year as well.

Shikhar Dhawan has been one among the consistent performers in the IPL. The left-handed opener has proved his prowess in white-ball cricket at the international level as well. Dhawan is someone who can be explosive, provide stability and carry the batting around him. Dhawan made his return to Delhi Capitals in 2019. He has been the most consistent batter for them ever since. He scored 521 runs in IPL 2019, followed by 618 runs in 2020 and 587 runs in 2021. Quite clearly, Dhawan has played a key role in Delhi’s successful turnaround in the last few seasons. In a team with immense young talent, particularly in the batting, Dhawan’s role becomes all the more important with the amount of experience he carries.

Ab de Villiers, along with Virat Kohli, has been the pillar of RCB for countless seasons in the IPL now. He has shouldered the responsibility of the batting consistently for Bangalore. If winning games from almost impossible situations is an art, then Ab de Villiers has truly been the Picasso as far as Bangalore are concerned. Time and again, he has proven his worth in the IPL, that only someone of his experience and calibre can pull off. Since 2018, Ab de Villiers has scored 400 plus runs every season barring 2021. Although he may not have been at his brutal best, he is someone whom any franchise would definitely want to have in their set-up. Ab de Villiers has scored 5162 runs in his IPL career and is a proven match-winner. RCB will certainly bank on his experience once again come the 2022 season.

Kane Williamson is right among the best players in the world at the moment. In a league of hard-hitters, Williamson’s nature of rotating the strike, building the innings and scoring crucial runs is second to none. This ability of Williamson makes him one of Hyderabad’s most valuable asset. Moreover, he is the perfect leader as well. Williamson has shown his captaincy skills with New Zealand and Hyderabad will surely want him to lead the side in IPL 2022 and beyond. He captained Hyderabad to final in 2018, also scoring 735 runs with the bat that year, averaging 52.50. Williamson is a cool customer and has made his place in a team filled with star overseas players.

Given the form Jos Buttler has shown in the T20 World Cup for England, he is a no-brainer in Rajasthan‘s retention list for IPL 2022. His numbers in white-ball cricket have been phenomenal. Buttler joined the Royals in 2018 and made his presence felt in the IPL right-away, scoring 548 runs at a strike-rate of 155.24 in that season. Having played just 8 games in 2019, he scored 311 runs. Jos Buttler is the X-factor player in this format and is a must-have in any franchise. More so, the Rajasthan Royals desperately need someone who can provide them with the firepower in their batting. Buttler is an integral part of England’s white-ball set up as well. Buttler is certainly a dangerous batter and should be an important member of the Royal’s side.

Despite Punjab failing to make the play-offs consistently, Shami has always been amongst wickets for the side. He was their leading wicket-taker in IPL 2021 with 19 wickets. Shami has picked 19 and 20 wickets in 2019 and 2020 respectively. He has the ability to bowl with the new ball and is quite effective at the death as well. The right-arm pacer has been the leader of their pace attack. Given his consistent performances through the years, Shami is definitely someone whom PBKS should look to retain.

Russell has lit up the IPL with his stellar performances for KKR on several occasions. The hard-hitting batter can take the game away single-handedly with the bat. He is also a viable option with the ball at the death. Having played across various T20 franchise leagues, Russell is certainly experienced and a match-winner in his own right. He had his best season for KKR in the 2019 IPL, where he scored 510 runs apart from picking 11 wickets.
