In match 23 of IPL 2022, five times champions – Mumbai Indians suffered 5th consecutive loss of the season, this time at the hands of Punjab Kings by 12 runs. Chasing a target of 199 runs, Mumbai Indians were in comfortable position with 116 runs in 11 overs but lost their way afterwards.
The 5th consecutive defeat in IPL 2022 for Mumbai Indians left the fans disappointed. Despite playing good cricket for most part of the match, MI slipped the match in final few overs. They lost 2 key wickets to run-outs when they appeared to be completely in control of the chase.
Tilak Varma was the first one to be run-out with Suryakumar Yadav at striker end. SKY hit the ball towards midwicket and Tilak started for a run. However, Surya was ball watching and Tilak has to come back to non-striker end after covering 3/4th pitch.
Next came Kieron Pollard who tried to steal a second run off a misfield and lost his wicket. Pollard’s wicket at the start of 17th over, hurt MI most as they required 47 runs off last 4 overs.
Suryakumar Yadav also perished in 19th over with 22 runs still required. However, there was no other batter left to score the balance runs as MI failed to reach the target and lost by 12 runs.
Earlier, PBKS openers Shikhar Dhawan & Mayank Agarwal provided a solid start. Agarwal scored his first half-century of the season in just 30 balls while Dhawan reached his own personal milestone in 37 balls.
Shahrukh Khan & Jitesh Sharma scored 46 runs in just 2.4 overs after Dhawan’s wicket. PBKS reached 198 runs in 20 overs which proved to be 12 runs more than MI could chase. With the victory PBKS moved to 3rd place in points table while MI stayed at the bottom of the table with 5 losses in as many matches.
