IPL Retentions 2022: Kumar Sangakkara reveals why Rajasthan Royals released Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer

On Tuesday, Rajasthan Royals announced the list of the retained players ahead of the mega auctions for the IPL 2022. The franchise has retained a total of three players, including two Indians and one overseas player.

The Royals from Rajasthan have put a lot of faith in their young skipper Sanju Samson, uncapped Yashasvi Jaiswal, and the explosive Englishman Jos Buttler.

However, the biggest takeaway from RR’s retention list was the absence of Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer. Both Stokes and Archer missed the UAE leg of IPL 2021 through injury, with Stokes also taking an indefinite break from cricket, citing his mental health.

Rajasthan Royals wanted to retain 4 players: Kumar Sangakkara

RR’s Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara spoke on the approach behind the retention and revealed why they let go of the likes of Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer.

Talking about Ben Stokes, Sangakkara said, Ben Stokes is the best all-rounder I have seen in a very long time. [He’s] an absolute match-winner and he has shown that for Rajasthan Royals. Absolutely brilliant as a team man, brilliant in a leadership role. He just brings his amazing energy to the field.”

The legendary Sri Lankan batsman further elaborated Rajasthan Royals’ retention strategy and talked about Jofra Archer as well.

“We had to consider the number of retentions possible. Player availability, in terms of how much of the tournament that a player is available for. It’s the same with Jofra. We did everything to ascertain the nature of the injury, the recovery period. There hasn’t been a phenomenon like Jofra Archer in any form of cricket, especially T20 cricket. And I know the players themselves understand our reasoning, even though they may be disappointed. I am sure they are, as we are as a franchise. All these dynamics come into play,” elaborated Sangakkara.

It would be interesting to the Rajasthan Royals’ strategy going in the IPL 2022 auction as it won’t be easy for them to replace the quality of Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer.
