Middle-order batter Kusal Mendis returns to the 17-player Sri Lanka squad for the three match ODI series against Zimbabwe at home starting January 16.
Mendis makes a return to the national side with his one-year ban lifted by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) earlier this month.
Dhananjaya De Silva will miss the series due to paternity leave while Avishka Fernando, Janith Liyanage, and Kamil Mishara are Covid positive and will not participate. SLC also confirmed that Lahiru Kumara and Kalana Parera failed to meet the fitness standards and will not be picked for the series. Sri Lanka’s lead white ball spinner Wanindu Hasaranga will also not be part of the ODI series.
Nuwan Thushara, Chamika Gunasekara, and Shiran Fernando are the three uncapped pace bowlers in the squad for the three match ODI series against Zimbabwe. Thushara was Galle Gladiator’s second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament. He has played 15 List-A matches and has picked up 11 wickets so far in his short career. Gunasekara also impressed SLC’s selection committee with his recent 6 for 83 against Pakistan A while Shiran has 26 wickets so far in his List-A matches.
Ashen Bandara, Pulina Tharanga, Nimesh Vimukthi, Ashian Daniel, Asitha Fernando, Vishwa Fernando are the six standby players for Sri Lanka.
The three match ODI series is scheduled to begin on Sunday, January 16, at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. The second and third fixtures will be played on January 18 and January 21, respectively at the same venue.
