After India won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, the Indian Premier League (IPL) was conceptualized. The first edition of IPL – the most cash-rich T20 cricket league, began in 2008 and is considered as most rigorous and most popular cricket league in the world. In this post we will see the list of IPL Winners teams from 2008 to 2022 season.
As all cricket fans knew, Mumbai Indians is the most successful team in IPL history having won the tournament five times. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is the second most successful team with four titles to their name.
Gujarat Titans won their first IPL trophy by beating Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2022 finals by 7 wickets. CSK won the last IPL 2021 held in the UAE by beating KKR by 27 runs.
Rohit Sharma – skipper of Mumbai Indians is the most successful captain in IPL history with 5 titles under his name. He is followed by MS Dhoni – who won the IPL crown four times for CSK.

IPL Winners List
IPL 2008 Winner: Rajasthan Royals
In the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League in 2008 (IPL 2008), Shane Warne led Rajasthan Royals won the IPL trophy for the first time. Rajasthan Royals picked up a well balanced side with Graeme Smith, Shane Watson, Yusuf Pathan, Mohammad Kaif, Sohail Tanvir and Munaf Patel.
In the league phase, Rajasthan Royals won 11 out of their 14 matches and stayed at the top of the points table. In the semifinals – Rajasthan Royals faced Delhi Daredevils who qualified just ahead of Mumbai Indians. Rajasthan Royals defeated Delhi Daredevils by a huge margin of 105 runs. Chennai Super Kings become the second team in the finals by defeating Kings XI Punjab by 9 wickets in the semifinals.
In the final match, Rajasthan Royals invited Chennai Super Kings to bat first after winning the toss. Yusuf Pathan played the match of the his lifetime. While bowling, he picked up three crucial wickets to limit CSK to 163/5. While Chasing Rajasthan Royals were reeling with 42/3 in 6.4 overs but then Pathan partnered with Shane Watson in the middle. The pair batted aggressively before Muralitharan trapped Watson. Soon after, Pathan also succumbed at a score of 143 in 17.4 overs after scoring 56 from 39 deliveries.
Captain Shane Warne kept his cool with Pakistan fast bowler Sohail Tanvir to score the balance runs and win the first IPL trophy.
IPL 2009 Winner: Deccan Chargers
Deccan Chargers who finished at the bottom of the points table in IPL 2008, were able to qualify for the playoffs for the first time at fourth place. Adam Gilchrist leading the team with other incredible hitters like Andrew Symonds, Herschelle Gibbs and young Rohit Sharma. Pragyan Ojha and RP Singh became the crucial part of the bowling side with Ojha picking up 18 wickets in the tournament. Deccan Chargers defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore led by Anil Kumble in the finals by 6 runs.
IPL 2010 Winner: Chennai Super Kings
After successfully reaching the playoffs for the first two IPL tournaments, MS Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings to their first title win in 2010. With consistent performers in the team like Matthew Hayden, Suresh Raina, Muralitharan, Albie Morkel, Murali Vijay. CSK defeated Sachin Tendulkar led – Mumbai Indians in the finals by 22 runs to lift the trophy. Suresh Raina became the Player of the Match after scoring 57 runs off just 35 balls.
IPL 2011 Winner: Chennai Super Kings
Second consecutive year, Chennai Super Kings were able to win the IPL Trophy by defending their title. Royal Challengers Bangalore lost the finals for the second time in two years despite staying at the top of the points table. Murali Vijay and Mike Hussey blasted Royal Challengers Bangalore bowlers after winning the toss and batting first. Vijay and Hussey scored 159 runs in 14.5 overs to shatter RCB dreams of winning the trophy. CSK ended up at 205 in 20 overs with RCB folding out for 147 losing the match by 58 runs.
IPL 2012 Winner: Kolkata Knight Riders
Finally Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Chennai Super Kings in the final of IPL 201 to win their first IPL trophy. This was CSK’s fourth final appearance in five seasons but they couldn’t convert it into third title. Gautam Gambhir lead the team successfully throughout the tournament. In the finals, KKR got a huge target of 190 runs but Manvinder Bisla took the charge and scored 89 off just 48 balls to chase the target.
IPL 2013 Winner: Mumbai Indians
Ricky Ponting started the IPL 2013 as Mumbai Indians captain but handed it to Rohit Sharma midway in the tournament. Hitman – Rohit Sharma led the Mumbai Indians to their first title by defeating Chennai Super Kings in yet another final. This was CSK’s fifth final of IPL in six seasons. Mumbai Indians defeated Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2013 final by 23 runs. After scoring 148 runs in their allotted 20 overs, Mumbai Indians successfully defended the total by allowing CSK to score only 125 runs.
IPL 2014 Winner: Kolkata Knight Riders
Gautam Gambhir led the KKR team to their second IPL title by defeating KXIP in the finals. Robin Utthappa got the orange cap in IPL 2014 for scoring 660 runs in 16 innings.Saha scored a brilliant century to lead KXIP to setup a huge target of 200 runs for KKR.
Manish Pandey played a superb innings in the finals against KXIP but he was dismissed for 94 runs. Piyush Chawla scored crucial 13 runs off just 5 deliveries to chase down the target with 3 balls to spare.
IPL 2015 Winner: Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians won their second title in alternate years under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. Meeting for the third time in IPL Finals both Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings were strong contender for the title. However, Mumbai Indians won the battle second time in a row by defeating CSK by 41 runs. Lendl Simmons and Rohit Sharma scored swashbuckling half-centuries to setup a target of 203 runs for CSK. Lasith Malinga along with Harbhajan Singh and Mitchell McClenaghan restricted CK to 161/8 in 20 overs.
IPL 2016 Winner: Sunrisers Hyderabad
Playing for the first time in the IPL Finals under the captaincy of David Warner, Sunrisers Hyderabad won the finals against Royal Challengers Bangalore by just 8 runs. Virat Kohli led RCB from the front and scored 973 runs in 16 innings with 4 centuries and 7 half-centuries. Despite winning the Orange Cap, Virat Kohli can’t take RCB over the line in the finals.
Chasing a huge target of 209 runs, RCB started brilliantly with Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle scoring 114 runs for the first wicket in just 10.3 overs. However, RCB lost the way in the death overs, courtesy superb bowling by Ben Cutting, Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the last overs. RCB could only manage 200/7 in their 20 overs and lost their third final by 8 runs.
IPL 2017 Winner: Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians became the first team to win three IPL titles overtaking Chennai Super Kings & Kolkata Knight Riders. IPL 2017 final was played between Mumbai Indians and Royal Pune Supergiants. The match went to the wire till the last ball with MI winning the final by just 1 runs.
IPL 2018 Winner: Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings followed Mumbai Indians by winning their third title in eight IPL final appearances. Playing in their second final and first under the captaincy of Kane Williamson, Sunrisers Hyderabad made a challenging 178 runs in 20 overs. Shane Watson scored a swashbuckling century to win the Third IPL Trophy for CSK by 8 wickets.
IPL 2019 Winner: Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians became the first team in IPL history to win more than three IPL titles. One more time, the final was played between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings – the fourth final between both teams. Mumbai won the contest with their third win against CSK in four finals. Lasith Malinga produced a gem of a delivery on the last ball to scalp Shardul Thakur on the last ball of the match and winning the title for MI by 1 runs.
IPL 2020 Winner: Mumbai Indians
Mumbai broke another record by winning the IPL crown for the 5th time which is 2 more than Chennai Super Kings who are second on the list. They started the tournament with a loss but gained momentum afterwards. They won the title by beating the first time finalists – Delhi Capitals comfortably as they beat them four times in the tournament.
IPL 2021 Winner: Chennai Super Kings
After a disappointing IPL 2020 when CSK failed to qualify in the playoffs for the first time, MS Dhoni take the team to their 4th IPL title in a dream season. After staying in the top 2 for most of the season, they booked their playoffs birth against Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 1.
With MS Dhoni’s cameo, CSK beat DC in a closely fought Qualifier 1 and reached their 9th IPL final. In the final, they faced a resurgent contender – KKR who won 7 out of 9 matches in the UAE leg of IPL 2021 to reach the final. The contest was touted to be mainly between CSK batting & KKR bowling unit.
CSK openers – Faf du Plessis & Ruturaj Gaikwad (Orange Cap Winner) played well against KKR bowling attack and CSK scored 192/3 in 20 overs. Despite KKR openers starting well, their middle order once again struggled and ultimately KKR lost the IPL 2021 final by 27 runs.
IPL 2022 Winner: Gujarat Titans
In the IPL 2022 finals, Gujarat Titans beat Rajasthan Royals to clinch their maiden IPL title in their first IPL season itself. Hardik Pandya lead the Gujarat Titans team to victory with his allround brilliance on the field. In the final Pandya won the Player of the Match award for his allround performance.
First Hardik Pandya took 3 wickets for just 17 runs in his 4 overs spell and then he scored 34 runs in a crucial chase. His bowling helped GT restrict RR for just 130 runs in 20 overs. Pandya dismissed Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson & Shimron Hetmyer – the best three batters for RR in IPL 2022.
In the tricky chase, Hardik Pandya scored 34 runs off 30 deliveries and helped Gujarat Titans win their first IPL title by 7 wickets.
