Mahela Jayawardene’s role in the U19 World Cup will be important, therefore he would be with them team throughout the tournament.
Sri Lanka’s middle-order batsman Mahela Jayawardene who has been known for his seamless transition in the world of cricket has recently been appointed as the Consultant coach for the upcoming U 19 World Cup. The selectors believe that his presence will make a very positive impact on the team’s morale and the environment in which the team is going to prepare itself.
Mahela is amongst the best run-scorers and the finest cricketers the world has ever seen. His remarkable records and achievements in the international cricketing fraternity make him a world-class cricketer.
Ashely de Silva, the Sri Lanka Cricket CEO mentioned that “Mahela will be with Sri Lanka Under 19 team during the entire tournament.” “He will leave the island on January 9th and will remain with the team during the entire competition”, he added.
Even before he was appointed as the consultant coach he had travelled with the T20 team for the opening matches to UAE and exhibited his role in technical advice and planning in a strategical way for the remaining fixtures.
The U 19 team will be headed by coach, Avishka Gunawardene who was appointed in September last year. The team performed well during the home series during the last few months.
The ICC Youth World Cup is set to begin from January 14th with the two Group D matches having Scotland, West Indies, Australia in the group. Sri Lanka will begin their campaign on the same day playing against Scotland. The campaign is expected to last till February 5th.
After getting appointed as the team’s consultant coach Jayawardene said, “I am very passionate about Sri Lankan cricket and believe that with a coordinated and focused team effort, taking a holistic approach working across all age groups, we can achieve consistent success in the future.
