Pak vs NZ 2021: Daryl Mitchell replaces an injured Tom Blundell in New Zealand ODI squad to face Pakistan

New Zealand’s wicket-keeper batsman Tom Blundell has been ruled out of the 3-match ODI series against Pakistan starting on the 17th of September 2021 at Rawalpindi due to a left quad strain. All-rounder Daryl Mitchell has been added to the ODI squad and will be available from the 2nd ODI.

Blackcaps physio Nishil Shah said that Blundell has still not recovered from the injury he sustained during the 4th T20I against Bangladesh at Dhaka. So he will have to continue rehab and miss the ODIs.

Tom’s been working hard since the injury in Bangladesh. The injury’s not quite where we want it so we think it’s best for him to concentrate on his rehab given the big summer of cricket ahead,” said Shah.

We’re hopeful he’ll be available again for the T20I series: Glenn Pocknall

Daryl Mitchell, a medium-pace bowling all-rounder will rounder will join the team. Mitchell was earlier named only in the T20I squad for the series that starts after these 3 ODIs. He is also a handy batsman lower the order and has scored a Test century which coincidentally came against Pakistan to go with an ODI ton. He will be available from the 2nd ODI after completing his mandatory quarantine.

New Zealand coach for this series Glenn Pocknall welcomed Mitchell’s addition but added they will miss Blundell’s wicket-keeping skills. He was hopeful that Blundel will be fit in time for the T20I series that follows.

Obviously everyone is gutted for Tom, he’s a quality player with a diverse skill-set. He’ll remain with the squad and we’re hopeful he’ll be available again for the T20I series. We’re fortunate to have someone of Daryl’s quality to join us early for the ODIs,” he said.

He’s shown last summer what a destructive batsman he is, while also offering another useful bowling option. With Tom out, we do lose our first choice back-up wicket-keeping option. However there are several guys in the squad with keeping experience and we’ll ensure they do the necessary work at training to be up to speed if called upon,

New Zealand will be Tom Latham in absence of many of their regular players like Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Tim Southee among others.
