Peter Siddle cuts short his stint with Essex due to personal reasons

Veteran paceman Peter Siddle returned to Australia after he ended his County Championship stint with Essex hastily due to personal reasons.

Essex have confirmed that Siddle will leave the club for ‘personal reasons’ and will miss the rest of the 2021 season.

Siddle gutted to be leaving Chelmsford

“I’m sad to be leaving Chelmsford early as I love playing for Essex. I’ve built some really strong bonds with the guys, so it’s upsetting that I have to go home, but hopefully, in the future, I can come back and play some more cricket for this great club,” said Peter Siddle.

Former Aussie quick hasn’t ruled the possibility of playing for Essex in the next year’s Championship, however; he also admitted the fact that he’s proceeding towards the back end of his career.

“I know I’m getting to the back end of my career, but I’ve still got some playing time left. We’ll see what happens in the coming months and in the build-up to the 2022 season, but fingers crossed there’s still a little bit more cricket to be played for Essex,” he added.

The 36-year-old bowler took 20 wickets at an average of 24 this season in five County Championship appearances this term for Essex. His best figures of 6/38 came in a drawn affair with Warwickshire last month.

Essex Head coach Anthony McGrath said: “Peter is a model professional so it’s obviously disappointing that we’re losing a player of his calibre.

“He’s a fierce competitor and always gives it his all, but we wish him nothing but the best and hopefully we see him back at Chelmsford soon.”

Peter Siddle finished with match figures of 4-97 in Essex’s rain-hit draw with Nottinghamshire last week, which proved to be the last appearance for the club.
