PSL 2021: What makes IPL a bigger league than PSL?

Published on

After years of planning and failing, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) finally rolled out in 2016. Among the world’s other major T20 leagues, namely the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Big Bash League (BBL), and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), PSL is the youngest one to come to effect.

The PSL, starting with five teams initially, has over the years expanded to a six-team affair. IPL, however, is the oldest of the leagues, being born in 2008.

Pakistan’s T20 league is still in its nascent stages, one may feel. However, its comparison with other leagues has been done on an intermittent basis. While all the other leagues have either completed their decade of existence or are nearing the milestone, PSL will host only its 6th season in 2021. (June 9 restart)

Ever wondered what makes a league big in comparison to its counterparts? We have seen the stadiums get inundated with fans. Almost the same bunch of cricketers are seen in contention in all these different leagues. Then what it is actually that tags one league superior to the others?

Many will agree with the fact that the IPL is undoubtedly the biggest of all the T20 franchise-based cricketing leagues happening across the globe. Then, in that regard, what factors make this particular tournament the marquee event?

To back our conclusion, we have based our opinion around the statistics of the year 2020 for different points- viewership, sponsorships, prize money, players award, revenue generated, etc for both IPL and PSL.

1. Viewership

As far as the numbers go, IPL is the most-attended cricket league in the world. In 2020, almost half of the Indian television viewers watched the tournament.

The tournament clocked a cumulative reach of 405 billion viewers —out of a total TV universe of 836 billion. Whereas on the other hand, PSL 2020, saw a viewership of only 57600.

2. Brand Value

In layman’s terms, brand value is nothing but the sale or replacement value. Despite the disruption brought about by the COVID-19, the brand value of the IPL in 2020 stood at US$4.4 billion (45,800 crores).

Meanwhile, PSL 2020’s brand value of US$240 million (1750 crores) was only 3.8% of IPL 2020. This sheds light on how much money is infused into a tournament like the IPL, and how much bigger it is in terms of money being involved in the PSL.

3. Player Salaries and Prize Money

We have often heard of IPL being called one of the richest leagues in the world, let alone in cricket. In that regard, if we look at the chart of the biggest and richest sporting leagues, IPL stands in the top 10. An achievement in itself considering the tournament is just a little over a decade old as compared to the NBAs, the NFLs, and the NHLs, which have existed for over 4-5 decades.

Comparing the prize money being awarded in the IPL and the PSL, a clear dichotomy gets reflected. In the 2020 edition, the winners- Mumbai Indians- were awarded a cash prize of INR 20 crore as opposed to PKR 3.72 crore to the PSL champions- Karachi Kings. (1 INR= 2.13 PKR)

A striking contrast in the highest-paid cricketers is also evident between the IPL and the PSL. The Indian captain, Virat Kohli, alone bags INR 17 crore for one season whereas PKR 1.02 crore is the highest amount being sanctioned to a cricketer in the PSL.

4. Comparison with Other Major Leagues

IPL has stolen the 4th spot in the rankings of the world’s most profitable league surpassing the prominent football leagues like the English Premier League (EPL), Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League, and others. No other cricket league has been able to make it to any list of the world’s best sporting leagues yet.

5.  Revenue Earned

As per reports, BCCI earned a whopping INR 4000 crore from IPL 2020 considering that the tournament took place behind closed doors during the pandemic.

Of the mentioned amount, the Board’s cut is INR 2400 crore while INR 1600 crore is distributed amongst the franchises. In comparison, PSL 2020 earned around PKR 97 crore out of which PCB’s share stands at PKR 28 crore, while the rest of PKR 69 crore is disbursed amongst the six franchises.

Taking all the above numbers into perspective, there is a clear financial dichotomy between the IPL and the PSL.

It is fair to say that IPL is indeed the mecca of franchise-based T20 cricket league, but PSL, who has some distance to cover, has already started to take baby steps to get there.
