Reflecting upon RCB’s decision to retain only three players ahead of the mega auction for the IPL 2022, Mike Hesson revealed the thought process behind it. Royal Challengers Bangalore released the list of retained players for the IPL 2022 season last night.
While many were expecting the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and Devdutt Padikkal to see among the players retained, both players failed to make the cut. Royal Challengers Bangalore have retained the former skipper Virat Kohli, Aussie all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, and Indian speedster Mohammad Siraz.
RCB wanted to retain 6-7 players
Addressing the RCB fans through a Twitter video, Mike Hesson told how they wanted to retain 6-7 players but could not. The director of cricket operations for RCB said it was a challenging task to retain only three-four players out of such a talented group.
He revealed that the most significant part of the retention discussion was whether they wanted to retain three or four players. However, the critical factor behind the decision was the auction purse.
He further explained if they had retained four players, then 42 crores would have been deducted from their purse, but now they have retained three players, only 33 crores have been deducted. The difference of 9 crores for a single player played a pivotal role in this decision for RCB.
Having retained Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Mohammed Siraj, RCB will head into the #IPL2022 Auction with a purse of 57 Crores. 💪🏼#PlayBold #WeAreChallengers #IPLRetention pic.twitter.com/KzRhBwnIqq

Virat is a leader; we will try to get some players back in the auction
The RCB’s director of cricket operations stated even if Virat Kohli is not the captain anymore, he will still be the leader of the side. He also talked about the factor behind the retentions of Glenn Maxwell and Mohammad Siraz.
Royal Challengers Bangalore will look to build a strong team for the Indian Premier League 2022 and beyond. They will also try to sign some players back in the auction to keep the team’s core intact, Mike Hesson further stated.
