Sarfaraz Ahmed was not keen in playing final T20I after overlooked for whole tour – Misbah

Pakistan Head Coach and Chief Selector – Misbah-ul-Haq revealed that the former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed was not keen in playing the final T20I match against England after overlooked for almost whole tour. Sarfaraz Ahmed was part of the 29-member squad for three test match and three T20I series against England.

However, Pakistan captain Azhar Ali opted for Muhammad Rizwan as preferred wicketkeeper for the test series omitting the experienced former captain. Sarfaraz made his comeback into the side after being sidelined for around 8 months. Muhammad Rizwan was named as Man of the Series in the test series for Pakistan.

In the T20I series also, Muhammad Rizwan was picked for the first two matches. But in the final match of the tour, Sarfaraz Ahmed was given the chance to play. However, he was reluctant to play and he told the same to Chief selector and head coach – Misbah about the same. Speaking in a news channel, Misbah told:

“He didn’t refuse to play, but yes, he had reservations and apprehensions over being asked to play in the last match of the tour.”

“If I had been in his position I would have felt the same way. A player does feel apprehensive and uncertain if he is told to play in the last match of the tour after not playing in earlier matches.”

We had a candid discussion about Sarfaraz’s future – Misbah

Pakistan lost the three test match series against England by 1-0 after losing the first match. Pakistan team was cruising to victory with England down at 117/5 but Buttler and Chris Woakes took the match away from Pakistan in the final session. The T20I series was locked at 1-1 after the first match was washed out due to rain.

Adding further Misbah said that he along with batting coach – Younis Khan, Babar Azam had a candid discussion with Sarfaraz about his position in the team. Misbah said:

“After we had a candid discussion with him over his reservations, he played without apprehensions.”

According to reports, Sarfaraz became apprehensive the moment he was told he was in the playing XI for the final T20, which Pakistan won, as he had trained for three hours in the nets without knowing he was to play and had gotten tired.
