Indian Test opener Shubman Gill is in doubt for the five match Test series against England, starting August 4 owing to his leg injury.
Gill looked in good nick during the World Test Championship Final against New Zealand which impressed many cricket pundits including the likes of Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton and was looking to cash in on his form but the injury will disrupt the team combination in the England series. He scored a cautious 28 in the first innings of the WTC Final.
“There is a chance that Shubman could be ruled out of the whole Test tour even though it is still a month away. The injury is serious is what we have come to know,” a senior BCCI official told PTI.
Uncertainty about the severness of the injury to Gill
Further details of Gill’s injury, including which leg, remain unknown as the Indian squad is currently on a three-week break before they reassemble in Durham from July 15. Gill continues to be in England at the moment under the watchful eyes of Physio Nitin Patel and strength and conditioning coach Sohum Desai before the Indian team management takes a final call based on the seriousness of the injury.
Shubman Gill has represented India in eight Tests thus far, amassing 414 runs at an average of 31.84.
The first Test of the five match Test series will kick off on August 4 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul are the other two openers in the squad and if Gill is ruled out, Abhimanyu Easwaran is the likely replacement from the standby list.
