Aakash Chopra has heaped praise on Deepak Chahar saying that the pacer is full of self-belief and that it goes as back as 10 years ago. Chahar along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar forged a stunning 84-run stand to take India to a win from the jaws of defeat against Sri Lanka on Tuesday in the 2nd ODI.
His exceptional knock of unbeaten 69 under pressure ensured India won the series 2-0 and was deservedly named the player of the match. He earlier took 2 wickets with the ball as well making it a great all-round effort.
Aakash Chopra talking on his Youtube channel about the 2nd match gave his take on Deepak Chahar’s confidence in his batting. The former Indian player elaborated about his conversations with Chahar 10 years back when both represented Rajasthan in domestic cricket.
“Deepak Chahar is a story of belief, there is so much self-belief in him that sometimes it feels, it is over-confidence. Even ten years ago, when I met him, he used to tell me that he bats well, hits fours and sixes, and that I am giving him less batting. Whenever you talk to him, he talks about bowling but it is not possible that he will not talk about his batting,” Aakash said.
Aakash further called Chahar’s shot selection during the chase was impeccable and added that victory was nothing short of a heist. The former opener appreciated Chahar’s efforts as it won India not only the game but also the series.
“There were two or three very important parts of his batting. Firstly, the self-belief that he can win the match from here. Secondly, his shot selection. The calmness with which he played and the shot selection, it was almost impeccable,” he added.
“There is no difference in his saying and doing, he is the same guy. A match which seemed India cannot win, they won that match as well. Deepak Chahar snatched a win from the jaws of defeat. It was that kind of a victory,” the former Indian opener added.
“Of course, he took two wickets as well. He didn’t get wickets with the new ball, so what, but he has taken two wickets each in both the matches with the old ball. And here he played an extremely important knock and hit the winning the shot to win India not only the match but the series,”

I am saying Suryakumar Yadav will be in India’s T20 World Cup team- Aakash Chopra
Aakash talked about India’s best top-order on view in the 2nd ODI, Suryakumar Yadav. The right-hander played an attacking stroke-filled knock of 53 before being dismissed by Lakhshan Sandakan.
The cricketer-turned-analyst was of the opinion that Yadav will be a feature in India’s T20 squad in UAE later this year. Calling him a sensational player, Aakash pointed out how well SKY has adapted himself to being a middle-order player despite playing at the top just a few years back.
“Let me put my neck on the block, I am saying Suryakumar Yadav will be in India’s T20 World Cup team although there will still be debate and competition, but I feel he will pip somebody to the post. There is only a 15-member squad in the ICC events but this player will make his place in that fifteen, he has been absolutely sensational,” Aakash said.
“Suryakumar Yadav is a different kind of player. Two years ago, Suryakumar Yadav used to bat up the order and was unable to score runs after the powerplay. But now the game we have seen, he is batting at No.5, he plays as though he is made for that position. The Indian team could need someone at No.5,” he added.
