SL vs Ind 2021: Shikhar Dhawan says he is “humbled” after being named the Indian captain for the Lankan tour

India’s veteran opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan was named the captain of the Indian team for their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. This will be the first time Dhawan will lead the men in blue in any format of the game.

BCCI on Thursday announced a 20-member squad for the tour starting on July 13th. It will include 3 ODIs and as many T20Is. He will be the most experienced player in the team having played  34 Tests, 142 ODIs, and 65 T20 matches.

Dhawan has been a prolific batsman for the Indian team in the ODIs. The left-hander is just 23 shy of reaching 6000 runs in ODIs at an outstanding average of 45.28 with 17 centuries. He is all set to become the 24th player to captain India in the ODI format and 7th in T20Is.

The next most experienced player in the team is pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar who was named as Dhawan’s deputy. The left-hander took to Twitter to express his joy of leading the country for the first time.

Dhawan tweeted, “Honoured to be given the opportunity to lead my country India. Thank you all for your wishes.

With the majority of all-format players are away in England for the WTC Final and the Test series, the selectors have included many fresh faces in the team. The likes Devdutt Padikkal, Krishnappa Gautham, Nitish Rana, Rituraj Gaikwad, and Chetan Sakaria earned their maiden national team call-up.
