Aakash Chopra has said that he is a great Prithvi Shaw fan and that his style of batting cannot be replicated by any batsman in the country. He also pointed out the troubles the Indian pacers have had when bowling in the powerplays.
India may have won the 1st ODI quite convincingly but they do have some issues, especially with the pacers. Since 2020, Indian bowlers have had the worst average when it comes to bowling in the first powerplay(1-10 overs). They have picked just 6 wickets in that period since Jan 2020.
Deepak Chahar should have bowled at the death instead of Hardik- Aakash Chopra
In the first ODI too, it was leg spinner Yuzuvendra Chahal who got India the initial breakthrough bowling in the 10th over. Aakash Chopra pointed out this fact in his latest Youtube video.
Aakash also questioned Shikhar Dhawan’s tactic of not using Deepak Chahar in the death overs despite him picking wickets with the old ball. The pacer came back in his 2nd spell to pick 2 wickets in consecutive overs. However, the all-rounder Hardik Pandya was chosen to bowl through the end along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
The former cricketer said that Deepak could have been tried in the end overs. He added that he was surprised with Kuldeep Yadav and Chahar not completing their 10 overs.
“I had a question if the bowlers’ management was spot on, maybe not, the only thing that Shikhar might not have actually done right. Hardik Pandya could have bowled between the 41st to 44th overs and Deepak Chahar should have been given the 47th and 49th, so that you can at least see how he bowls at the end,” Aakash said.
“Deepak took two wickets with the old ball. It was a litmus test of sorts for him. The selectors wanted to give him a chance with the old ball. There he took two wickets but surprise surprise, after that he was stopped,” he added.
“Hardik Pandya comes back and bowls the end overs, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar alongside him. 32 runs are scored off the last two overs – 19 off the last over and Hardik Pandya was also expensive before that. Kuldeep didn’t bowl his full overs, I am surprised, Deepak Chahar didn’t bowl his full overs, I am surprised,” Aakash said.
“When you lose the toss and get to bowl first, there is one thing that is troubling India. And that is because we are not taking wickets with the new ball. Let’s be very honest. This is not only for now, whether you play Bumrah, Shami, Bhuvi, Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini or T Natarajan,”

Shaw let a big century slip out of his hands- Aakash Chopra
“It seemed the momentum will be with Sri Lanka but Prithvi came, Prithvi ‘Shaw’, Prithvi conquered. He is from a different planet. I am a huge Prithvi Shaw fan because you will not get a batsman like that in entire India,” Aakash added.
“Viru (Virender Sehwag) used to be there but this player, 43 runs in just 24 balls, and it seemed without breaking a sweat, without taking chances, only on the rise and through the gap. I mean what a player. 2021 has been in this player’s name, from the Vijay Hazare Trophy to the IPL to now,” he said.
Adding that Shaw should have continued to bat longer, Aakash felt that blow to his head may have hindered his concentration.
“However, when he got hit on the head, he got a little rattled and then played a bad shot to get out. He will think about this, that these 43 runs are pretty and explosive but people tend to forget 40-odd runs. He had a chance today to convert it into 140. You have let that chance slip away from your hands,” he concluded.
India will take on the host Sri Lanka in the 2nd ODI at Colombo on Tuesday after winning the first game. The visitors will look to improve their bowling performance with the new ball and Shaw will hope to make it big.
