Sri Lankan police dropped all charges into the World Cup 2011 final match-fixing allegations. Few days back former Sri Lankan sports minister – Mahindananda Aluthgamage alleged that the World Cup 2011 final was thrown away by Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan police found no evidences of match-fixing by players to let India won the World Cup 2011 final. The police team probed with former Sri Lanka captain – Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and opening batsman Upul Tharanga. They also probed the former chief selector Aravinda de Silva over suspicions that have kept on lingering for many years.
The police officials said that they are completely satisfied with the explanation about the changes that were made to the squad for finals. Team Sri Lanka made four changes in the playing XI which eventually lost to India in Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. A Top police told AFP:
“We are satisfied with their explanation. The inquiry is now closed. They had reasonable explanations about the changes that were made to the final squad.”
Kumar Sangakkara – Sri Lankan captain in the 2011 World Cup final was interrogated by the officials on Tuesday for more than 10 hours. Afterwards – Mahela Jayawardene – vice-captain of the team was also investigated by the Special investigation unit (SIU) office.
Aluthgamage should be prosecuted for false allegations against legends
The match-fixing allegations were triggered by Aluthgamage – then sports minister of Sri Lanka. Another sports minister of Sri Lanka – Harin Fernando said that Aluthgamage should be prosecuted for making a false allegation against cricket legends.
It is worth to note that in November, Sri Lanka have introduced anti-corruption laws which made match-fixing as a criminal offense. The offenders face fines of up to 100 million rupeers (USD 555,000) and up to 10 years imprisonment.
Sri Lanka while batting first setup a challenging target of 275 runs for India. While chasing despite loosing Sehwag and Sachin early, Gautam Gambhir made a gritty 97. MS Dhoni – the captain of team India finished the chase with a six over long-on off Nuvan Kulasekara in 49th over. Dhoni remained unbeaten with 91 off just 79 deliveries.
