Former Srilanka skipper Angelo Mathews has been cleared fit for the upcoming home series against England. The all-rounder will return to the Test arena after being named in the 22-man squad.

Srilanka Cricket (SLC) reinstated Mathews to the national men’s cricket Test team after he suffered a hamstring injury in the domestic T20 competition- Lanka Premier League (LPL). This is the nth time when Mathews has missed a series due to his hamstring issue.

Mathews-Chandimal to form the middle-order of Srilanka

Mathews missed Sri Lanka’s last Test series against South Africa, which the tourists lost 2-0. He got a recall after recovering well from the hamstring injury. He’ll play only as a specialist batsman which itself indicates that the all-rounder is unlikely to bowl in the England series. He is likely to take up a middle-order position, with Dinesh Chandimal also set to slot back in after missing the last Test.

Ramesh Mendis earned a call-up

Pacer Nuwan Pradeep, batsman Roshen Silva and left-arm wrist-spinner Lakshan Sandakan are all included in the squad. Uncapped spin-bowling allrounder Ramesh Mendis is also in the squad.

Suranga Lakmal and Lahiru Kumara have also recovered from the various strains, but they’re not certain to be in the XI. left-arm Vishwa Fernando, Dushmantha Chameera, and Asitha Fernando are the other 3 seam bowling options.

Dhananjaya de Silva, who tore a ligament in his thigh on Boxing Day, and Kasun Rajitha, who injured his groin in the last tour, are both out of the series altogether. Santhush Gunathilake and Dilshan Madushanka also left out of the squad.

The tour will consist of two Test matches which will be played behind closed doors at the Galle International Cricket stadium. It is set to begin on Thursday (January 14) and will be a part of the ICC Test Championship.

Srilanka Test Squad: Dimuth Karunaratne (Captain), Kusal Janith Perera, Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Oshada Fernando, Niroshan Dickwella, Minod Bhanuka, Lahiru Thirimanne, Lasith Embuldeniya, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dilruwan Perera, Suranga Lakmal, Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando, Dushmantha Chameera, Dasun Shanaka, Asitha Fernando, Roshen Silva, Lakshan Sandakan, Nuwan Pradeep, Ramesh Mendis.
