T20 World Cup 2021: Scotland SWOT Analysis

The Scottish side will enter the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 with a lot of confidence. They have won both of their warm-up games and will be riding with confidence. The well-settled unit will be led by Kyle Coetzer in the T20 World Cup 2021.

Scotland is placed in Group B in the Qualifiers along with Bangladesh, Oman, and Papua New Guinea. The Scottish side has a brilliant chance of finishing in the top two positions and qualifying for the Super 12s, starting from October 23.

Coetzer has led his side brilliantly in recent times and will look to continue in the same way in the upcoming global event. The team has adapted to the slow pitches of the UAE and will look to continue their winning run in the World Cup. They play their first game against Bangladesh on the opening day of the competition i.e., October 17.

Ahead of the first clash against Bangladesh, let’s have a look at the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the Scottish side.

Strengths

Scotland is a heavy-batting side. The likes of George Munsey, Kyle Coetzer, Matthew Cross, Calum MacLeod form a solid batting line-up. All these players have plenty of experience at the highest level and it will come in handy in the upcoming ICC event.

The bowling department is led by Safyaan Sharif, Josh Davey, Bradley Wheal who have been good in county cricket. They will play a major role in the team’s progress. All-rounder Richie Berrington has been in rich form leading to the World Cup and he is a vital cog in the Scottish side.

Weaknesses

The spin department is a concern for the Scottish side. With the T20 World Cup 2021 to be held in Oman and UAE, the pitches will assist spinners. Scotland lacks a quality spinner on their side. This might hurt them in the long run as the over-reliance on their pacers won’t give them results in the main draw.

The batting line-up consists of explosive batters. They lack a player who can play an anchor role during the innings and hold the innings from one end. The batters need to be cautious while facing quality attacks.

Opportunities

Chris Greaves, the South-African-born leg spinner will be eager to make an impact in the upcoming ICC event. He has impressed everyone with his leggies and will play a major role as he tends to pick wickets at crucial junctures.

Richie Berrington has been one of the consistent performers on the Scottish side. He will be looking to create a bigger impact in an ICC event, which he has lacked so far in his career.

Threats

The over-reliance on the top-order batters is the only concern for them. If the opposition manages to get early wickets, the middle-order will be exposed. It hasn’t had the best of the times in recent times.

Also, the pressure on pacers to deliver is immense. If they have an off-day, it could hurt them going ahead in the competition.
