Top 5 CSK vs MI encounters in IPL history

CSK vs MI, Match 27 of IPL 2021- Delhi

The last encounter between the sides in the India-leg of IPL 2021 was a high-scoring classic. In the 27th match of IPL 2021 held at Delhi, Mumbai Indians pulled off a humdinger by 4 wickets.

CSK batting first made 218/4 with 3 of their players Moeen Ali(58 off 36), Faf Du Plessis(50 off 28), and Ambati Rayudu(72* off 27) scoring half-centuries in quick time. But Pollard who had earlier took 2/12 in his 2 while bowling came to the part against one of his favorite opponents.

His unbeaten 87 off 38 won them the game in the final ball of the match and ensured MI’s first-ever successful 200+ run chase in IPL.

CSK vs MI, Final of IPL 2019- Hyderabad

Mumbai Indians won their 4th IPL title in another thrilling contest when they defeated their rivals CSK in the 2019 IPL final at Hyderbad by 1 run. Batting first, MI made 149/8 with Kieron Pollard top-scoring with 41 runs.

Though it was not a high score by any means, MI bowlers made it tough for the CSK batsman after a brisk start from their openers. Despite Shane Watson’s stunning display of 80 from 59 went in vain as Malinga’s brilliant final over clinched the game for MI. He had just 9 to defend but CSK could manage only 7.

MI vs CSK, Match 1 of IPL 2018, Mumbai

IPL 2018 opened with a much-awaited clash between the titans and this was so special because it was the return of CSK after a gap of 2 years to the IPL. As expected, the game gave many thrills, twists, and turns with the men in yellow emerging the victors by 1 wicket.

Mumbai made 165/4 batting first with 3 of their batters Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, and Krunal Pandya scoring 40+ in their batting efforts. CSK had a disappointing start to the chase half of the side for 75 runs in 12 overs. It looked lost for the Chennai team but Dwayne Bravo had other ideas.

He smashed 68 off 30 and single-handedly took the Super Kings to the finish line despite losing partners at the other end. This match will be remembered for the penultimate ball four by Kedar Jadhav who with a hamstring injury returned to finish the game for the CSK.

CSK vs MI, Final of IPL 2010- Mumbai

This was the very first time these 2 legendary teams met in an IPL final and CSK became the champions for the 1st time in their history after beating MI by 22 runs. Suresh Raina’s 57 off 35 helped CSK to pile up 168/5 with some useful contributions from other CSK batsmen like Dhoni, Murali Vijay.

CSK bowlers created pressure when it was their time to bowl and ultimately succumbing to the pressure. Though Sachin Tendulkar was the top-scorer with 48, it was Kieron Pollards’s 10-ball 27 that gave headaches to Dhoni as a skipper, and the latter’s thoughtful captaincy to remove the former won them the game by 22 runs.

MI vs CSK, Final of IPL 2013- Kolkata

Mumbai Indian’s first of 5 IPL title triumphs fittingly came against the CSK in the 2013 edition of IPL. Again it was Kieron Pollard’s masterclass that proved to be different between the sides.

Mumbai made 148/8 in the crucial final game and it was largely aided by a 32-ball 60 from all-rounder Kieron Pollard with Rayudu supporting him with 37. CSK lost their way in the chase losing 6 wickets for 39 within 8 overs. MS Dhoni fought a lone battle scoring 45-ball 63 but it was not enough.

The Mumbai Indians, eventually won the game by 23 runs and opened their account in IPL.
