The England U19 selection panel, headed by head coach Richard Dawson, named a strong 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup. England have won the U19 World Cup only once back in 1997-98. This time around, the tournament will commence from January 14. West Indies are the hosts for marquee U19 tournament.
England U19 have been drawn in Group A. The group consists of defending champions Bangladesh, Canada and United Arab Emirates. Hampshire’s Tom Prest will lead England in this U19 World Cup. Warwickshire’s Jacob Bethell will be his deputy.
Here are the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the England squad at the U19 World Cup 2022.
England U19 squad comprises of some quality players in their ranks. William Luxton will be one batter to watch out for. He has piled up 165 runs in the last seven games that he has played at a decent average of 33. Their vice-captain Jacob Bethell is capable of scoring with both the bat and the ball, known for his all-round abilities.
Skipper Tom Prest, George Thomas and James Seales form the core of their batting order as well. With the ball, Nathan Barnwell, Sonny Baker, Josh Boyden and Rehan Ahmed are the key names to look out for in this England U19 squad.
England U19 also played a home series against West Indies this year which they comfortably won 4-2. They will look to take confidence from the same.
England U19 did win the series against West Indies. However, they lost their next series to Sri Lanka 2-4 playing away from home. Tom Prest, William Luxton and James Coles were the only players to leave an impact in the series. England struggled to adjust to the conditions. Therefore, that is something which will worry them. Apart from Prest and Luxton, the rest of the batters failed to score substantially. James Coles is the only all-rounder in the side who has done well in the recent past. They will need each and every player to step up.
England U19 have won the Under-19 World Cup only once, way back in 1997-98. Therefore, this is an opportunity for them to end the draught and win the tournament for the second time. England seem to have a strong squad on paper. They are certainly one among the teams that are expected to do well in this tournament. England U19 will look to make the most of the warm-up fixtures leading to the main event.
England U19 are coming into the tournament off a series defeat to Sri Lanka away from home. They struggled to adjust to the conditions. Therefore, getting used to conditions quickly will be the biggest challenge for them at this U19 World Cup. If the few in-form players fail to perform, England could be in trouble and make an early exit as well.
"We're really looking forward to getting out there and testing ourselves against the best young players in the world, and continuing our development as a side and as individuals."
