U19 World Cup 2022: South Africa SWOT Analysis

Published on

South Africa will take part in the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup 2022. The event will take place in the West Indies from January 14. Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in Antigua will host the final of February 5. South Africa are placed in Group B alongside India, Uganda and Ireland.

George van Heerden will lead South Africa in this edition of the U19 World Cup. They won the tournament only once in the 2013-14 edition. South Africa will be keen to go and on and win the title once again this time around.

Let us take a look at the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of South Africa’s squad for the U19 World Cup 2022.

South Africa U19 played West Indies in a four-match series in December 2021. Therefore, they will be familiar with the conditions going into the U19 World Cup. They had a decent outing as the series was drawn 2-2. Their bowlers in particular, put up a good show in the series. Dewald Brewis was their leading wicket-taker with ten scalps. The likes of Asakhe Tsaka, Jan Coetzer and Liam Alder were also amongst wickets.

Brewis and Tsaka are key inclusions as they also performed well in the CSA Provincial T20 Cup. Moreover, all the players have experience of having played in CSA clubs. The series against West Indies will surely have served as the right preparation for South Africa heading into the U19 World Cup.

South Africa’s batters found it difficult to cope with the conditions against West Indies U19. Their batters failed to get going throughout the series despite them winning a couple of games. Therefore, batting will be a major issue for South Africa to ponder upon ahead of the U19 World Cup. Skipper George van Heerden will need to step up and lead from the front. The team has able batters but they need to find their rhythm.

George van Heerden is an able captain. He captained the Warriors in the Provincial T20 Cup as well. Heerden has the biggest opportunity and platform to lead South Africa to their second U19 World Cup trophy. Having recently played a series against West Indies U19 in West Indies, they also have a slight advantage of knowing the conditions and should look to make the most of it.

Batting appeared to be South Africa’s concern in their series against West Indies. This will be the biggest threat for them going into the U19 World Cup. The board has worked hard to bring the players together and they will be expected to fare well. However, with tough competition, their run could very well be cut short if the batters do not rise to the challenge. Moreover, they will face India U19 in their opening match, which will be the biggest challenge for them in order to start the tournament on a positive note.
