Women’s T20 Challenge 2022: SWOT Analysis of Trailblazers

Published on

The fourth edition of the Women’s Y20 Challenge is set to kick off on May 23. As seen in the previous editions, a total of three teams, namely, Supernovas, Trailblazers, and Velocity will compete with the final scheduled to take place on May 28. The Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune will host all games of this edition.

Trailblazers are the defending champions, having beaten the Supernovas in the final of the 2020 edition of the Women’s T20 Challenge. They reached the final of the first-ever edition back in 2018 but failed to get across the line. They did seek revenge for the loss against the Supernovas in the last edition by winning in the final.

The Trailblazers will kick start their title defense on May 23 against the Supernovas. Smriti Mandhana will continue to lead the side and leg-spinner Poonam Yadav has been named her deputy. Ahead of their first clash, let’s have a look at their Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.

Strengths

The Trailblazers will be led by Smriti Mandhana who is in rich form going into the Women’s T20 Challenge 2022. She was brilliant in the domestic competition and has tons of experience which will come in handy for them. She along with Hayley Matthews can form a formidable opening pair as both are capable of giving them good starts.

The spin duo of Poonam Yadav and Rajeshwari Gayakwad will play a vital role for them. Both have already troubled batter across the world while playing for India and will look to emulate their performances while representing the Trailblazers.

Weaknesses

The side lacks experienced pacers. Arundhati Reddy and Renuka Singh will lead the pace-bowling attack with left-arm pacer Shraddha Pokharkar supporting them. They haven’t got much experience at the highest level and it will be a challenge for them when they rub the shoulders with the best players in the world.

The over-reliance on Mandhana, Matthews might hurt them. They have got some inexperienced batters in their lineup and it remains to be seen how they go about their business. They have to contribute if they are to defend their title.

Opportunities

Jemimah Rodrigues lost her place in the Indian side just before the World Cup. The dynamic right-handed batter has already impressed everyone and will be eyeing a comeback in the national side with performances in the Women’s T20 Challenge 2022. She will be raring to go and grab the opportunity.

In the recently concluded Senior Women’s T20 Trophy 2022, S Meghana was brilliant. Part of the winning team, she provided solid starts to the Railways and will be looking to grab any opportunity that comes her way in the competition.

Threats

The major threat for them is their pace-bowling. They have inexperienced pacers on their side who haven’t had much game time at the highest level. The over-reliance on the spinners might come back to haunt them on the batting-friendly wicket of the MCA Stadium in Pune.
