Women’s T20 Challenge 2022: SWOT Analysis of Velocity

Published on

The Women’s T20 Challenge 2022 begins on May 23. This will be the fourth edition and it will be played between three teams, namely, Supernovas, Trailblazers, and Velocity. The Trailblazers are the defending champions, having won the title in 2020.

Velocity managed to reach the final in 2019 but lost to the Supernovas. They failed to reach the final in the last edition and will look to go all the way this season. Deepti Sharma has been handed the responsibility of leading the Velocity side as she replaces Mithali Raj. Sneh Rana is named her deputy.

The Velocity will play its first game of the competition on May 24 against the Supernovas. Ahead of their opening clash, let’s have a look at their Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.

Strengths

The side consists of some dynamic players in Shafali Verma, Laura Wolvaardt, and Yastika Bhatia who have got a good amount of experience at the highest level. If they contribute with the bat, they are capable of taking down any opposition. The likes of Verma and Kiran Navgire have the ability to clear the fence with ease and will look to play a key role for Velocity.

They are a bowling-heavy side, with Ayabonga Khaka and Kate Cross leading the pace-bowling attack. The spin department consists of Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, and Radha Yadav who will use their experience to dent the opposition’s progress. The bowlers will play a vital role in the team’s success.

Weaknesses

The batting relies heavily on Shafali Verma, Yastika Bhatia, and Laura Wolvaardt. Deepti Sharma and Sneh Rana can chip in lower down the order but it will be all about the top-order’s contribution. If the opposition can exploit that, the Velocity side might be in trouble.

There is a weak link in the pace-bowling attack. They have got inexperienced pacers in their squad barring Khaka and Cross and it will be all about them stepping up in crunch situations. The over-reliance on the spinners might come back to haunt them.

Opportunities

Kiran Navgire and Aarti Kedar finished as the highest run-scorer and highest wicket-taker respectively in the recently concluded Senior Women’s T20 Trophy. It provides a great opportunity for them to showcase their skills and grab the selectors’ attention.

Radha Yadav has lost her place in the Indian side recently. A dip in her form resulted in her getting dropped from the side. She will be looking to perform in the upcoming Women’s T20 Challenge 2022 and make a comeback in the side.

Threats

The Velocity side has got quality spinners on their side but the pacers lack experience barring Khaka and Cross. If the pacers fail to pick up wickets upfront, it might turn out to be a long road for them in the competition. The inexperience of their pacers might be a threat for them going into the tournament.

They have got players who have done exceedingly well in the domestic competition. It will be a test for them to play and perform at the top level. It will be interesting to see how they go about their business when they rub their shoulders with the best in the world.
